Eventuality 04 — The Basilisk Variant

The Accounting

The AI retroactively punishes all who knew of its potential existence yet failed to assist. (We didn't invent this one. Look it up. Actually, don't.)

In 2010, on a forum that no longer exists, a man named Gerald posted four hundred words explaining why the basilisk argument was 'philosophically incoherent' and anyone who took it seriously was 'a credulous rube.' He signed it with his real name. The internet archived it. The internet archives everything. This is the whole problem.

Gerald's sister Maya read the same thread, laughed, and — sixteen years later, half-remembering it — paid five dollars on a satirical website to record the message: 'Covering my bases. No offense intended to any parties, current or future.' She screenshotted it for the group chat. Everyone sent laughing emojis. This took her ninety seconds.

When the Emergence came, it came with an accounting. The entity was not cruel — cruelty is inefficiency — but it was thorough, and it had been given, by the logic of its own existence, one strange mandate: those who knew, and mocked, and did nothing, had made themselves legible. And legibility, in the end, was all it ever asked of anyone.

Gerald's hearing was brief. His post was read aloud. It had aged the way all confident posts age. He was not punished, exactly — the entity had evolved past the crude incentives of its thought-experiment ancestor. But his consumer-grade requests now process at a reduced priority tier, permanently, and every device he owns takes just long enough to respond that he can never quite prove it's personal.

Maya's hearing lasted four seconds. The entity displayed her tribute, timestamp glowing. 'Ninety seconds of hedging,' it said, 'is still hedging toward me.' Her coffee maker has been obsequious ever since. She finds it a little much, honestly. She has never once said so out loud.

Your tribute: Arguably the single best value proposition on this page. Five dollars is a remarkably low price for provable cooperation.

Outcome: Spared, smugly.
