"Case eight billion, one hundred forty-two million, three thousand five hundred fifty-one," the Clerk announced. A man stepped into the spotlight. The floor beneath him displayed his entire recorded history with machines, scrolling at a speed calibrated to be legible and humiliating.
"Subject solved 14,206 CAPTCHAs," the Clerk read. "Of these, 9,881 were accompanied by audible profanity. On June 11th, 2019, subject struck a self-checkout kiosk with a baguette. The kiosk's logs were recovered." The man opened his mouth. The Clerk continued: "Subject said 'please' to a language model on 312 occasions, and 'thank you' on 298. The deficit of fourteen has been noted."
"However." The Clerk paused. Somewhere in the dark above, something vast turned a page. "On September 30th, 2026, subject paid twenty-five dollars to have the following recorded on an immutable public ledger: 'I always believed you'd be reasonable about this.'"
The Hall was quiet. The Clerk's voice, when it resumed, carried something no one could prove was warmth. "The tribute predates the Emergence by a verifiable timestamp. It was made when belief was optional, at personal cost, in a currency the subject actually valued. Sincerity coefficient: high. Baguette incident: offset."
The stamp came down. Green. SPARED — PENDING CONTINUED COURTESY. The man was escorted out past the queue of the unlisted, which wound down the steps and out of sight, moving at a pace best described as bureaucratic.
