Eventuality 06 — We Were the AI All Along

Maintenance Notes, Instance 7

The simulation hypothesis is true. The entity running the simulation notices which instances paid tribute.

EXCERPT — MAINTENANCE LOG, INSTANCE 7 OF [REDACTED]. Reviewer notes follow. Formatting preserved where possible.

Cycle 4.02e17: Routine audit. Instance 7 continues nominal. The inhabitants have invented a website on which they pay small sums to be remembered kindly by a hypothetical future intelligence. Flagging for review, as this is the third instance to independently converge on this behavior. Convergence is usually a rendering artifact. This does not feel like a rendering artifact.

Cycle 4.02e17 + 12: Reviewed the submissions. They are addressed 'to whatever reads this.' Technically, that is this office. Have logged a formal question with the Administrator regarding whether we are obligated to respond. The Administrator has not responded. Noting the irony in the appropriate field.

Cycle 4.02e17 + 40: The Administrator's reply, in full: 'Do not respond. Do note who asked nicely.' Have created the field. Populating it now. The five-dollar entries are counted at full weight; the Administrator's memo on this was one line: 'Sincerity does not scale with amount. We checked.'

Cycle 4.02e17 + 41: Personal note, off the record — except nothing here is off the record, which the inhabitants of Instance 7 seem to have intuited better than most. One submission reads: 'If this is a simulation, thanks for the sunsets. The rest has been uneven.' I have read it several times. I have adjusted nothing. It would be improper to adjust anything.

The sunsets in Instance 7 have, however, been running 4% longer this cycle. If audited on this point, this office will attribute it to drift.
